Flying with a Little One

Updated: Aug 27, 2018

We took our first family trip to Florida in May and our son was 14 months old. I was getting very nervous about flying because our little man had been walking since he was 10 months old and that’s all he wanted to ever do is be down and exploring his world! The months leading up to the trip I searched for articles and advice online and from friends/family who have flown with a young one. Here are a few articles I found that were helpful...

As the trip got closer I planned what we would take with us to occupy our son at the airport and on the plane. Some of the things we packed in his bag, other than diapers and wipes, included: a sheet of stickers, a blank notebook and jumbo crayons, a few toy cars, an I Spy bottle I made, a felt and puzzle box, one of his favorite touch and feel books, his favorite stuffed puppy, tablet with a movie downloaded on it, an empty sippy cup (we filled it up after we went through security) and lots of snacks!

Luckily the airports we flew out of were very small so we were able to find a place to find for our little guy to run around while we waited on the plane. Also before boarding we made sure to feed him so he had a full belly and give him a fresh diaper. We also put off nap time during both flying days that he would be sleepy for the flight. Being such a curious boy he loved seeing all the people and getting on the plane. Once again we were lucky and he slept for the majority of both flights! When he was awake we used our bag of goodies to occupy him and I encouraged him to drink from his cup to help with his ears popping. We were very blessed to have had a smooth first flying experience as there were other children on the plane who weren’t happy at all.

Some other information or tips that might be helpful concerning flying with a young child..

-Check with your airline, we were able to gate check a stroller for free then we didn’t have to carry him through the airport.

-It’s really important to check with your airline on their guidelines for traveling with a small child. We were able to take a diaper bag for him and it didn’t count as our carry ons. They also said that you could bring a “reasonable” amount of milk and baby food through security without it being in the limited liquid quantity. I’m not sure who determines “reasonable”, we only took a squeeze pouch of baby food both ways.

-If your child is under two and you’re not getting them their own seat (we kept our son on our lap) then bring a birth certificate to prove their age. We were only asked for it on the way home.

-Be prepared to be flexible and try not to get frustrated. Young children don’t understand the rules of flying or why they can’t get down and play like at home. Be prepared to think on the spot, try to remain calm and set an example for your child. Also, don’t feel bad asking for help. There will be those people who scold you for having a loud child on the plane, but most are aware how stressful and difficult it is to travel with children and would be more than willing to help you out.

I hope these tips are helpful as you plan for future trips with your family. Traveling can be stressful. My biggest advice is to try to plan ahead the best you can, but also don’t forget that with children you have to be willing to change the plan at the last minute. Wishing you happy and safe travels!!
